Sandhill Cranes
Sandhill Cranes spend their time from dusk to dawn on sandbars in the Platte River which is shallow but wide. During the day, they leave the safety of the river to feed in fields nearby. This sustains them on their journey to the northern mainland U.S., Canada, and Alaska where breeding occurs over the summer months.
Below are two audio recordings I made of Sandhill Cranes during their 2019 April layover in Nebraska.
- Note the sound level during the Dawn Liftoff as they all leave the river at once. (See photos 13-15 for reference)
Here are a few images I recorded at the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at the Rowe Sanctuary in Gibbons, Nebraska in early April, 2019.
I was in a blind along the Platte River at dawn. It was heavily overcast that morning. The sun never shone but at least it did not rain. The cranes did not care either way.
